Interview with SCARLET

‘We Rnt Friends’ is the latest single from SCARLET, an independent artist, songwriter and producer from South East London. Released on March 25th, it’s an excellent pop song that she wrote following a break up with a lot of emotion but also a great tune! We caught up with Scarlet to talk about the new single and how she approaches her songwriting

Hi Scarlet! How’s everything going right now?
Hey gorl, all’s well.

What classic album cover is your current mood?
Maybe the Mac Demarco ‘2’ album cover: peace and guitar 🙂

“We Rnt Friends”, your new single, is out now. What was the inspiration behind it?
I wrote it after doing things you shouldn’t really do with someone who just tore your heart out and then they say “let’s just be friends”… like no, that’s not how it works lol. So yeah, lots of anger and frustration fuelled this track.

We’ve featured your previous singles “Cold Summer” and “Synthetic Devotion” on our weekly playlists over the past few years. How do you feel your approach to songwriting has changed over the course of the 3 singles?
I used to write as a storyteller, I never liked to delve too deep into my own life and feelings, for example ‘Cold Summer’ was written about a Timothee Chalamet film. However, the older I get the more I have to look inward, reflect on things so I can grow and heal and blablabla, but also the less I care about baiting myself out and as you can hear in ‘We Rnt Friends’, it’s very obvious what it’s about and it completely is just my raw feelings post breakup aha.

If you could only listen to one record, what would it be?
Easily ‘Don’t Delete The Kisses’ by Wolf Alice, it’s been my most streamed song for the past 4 years now and I’m not planning on breaking that streak!

Who did you listen to when you were growing up and how do they influence your music?
I grew up with House, Drum and Bass and Disco playing around the house constantly, but I got into more Indie and Alternative music as I got to around Year 9 I think, but honestly I was a massive Directioner. I loved One Direction with a burning passion. They are my true inspiration.

When did you know that you wanted to make and release music? Was it something fairly recent or has it always been a passion?
It’s always been a passion for me, but my family isn’t really musical so I never knew that it was something you could do without having to go on X Factor or something until I got to College to be honest, so when I learned about Logic, distributors and all that lovely stuff I was thrilled!

Do you have any live concerts or festival appearances planned this year?
Sadly no 🙁 but I’m currently working on a new live set up so hopefully I’ll start gigging again soon.

What would go on your signature pizza and what would it be called?
The “Say when………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..when” – mountains upon mountains of cheese.

What else do you have planned for 2022?
I’ve got a few singles lined up and hopefully a music video or 2… I’m currently working on a brand new live set up which is exciting so hopefully I’ll start gigging again soon!
