On This Day…1995
Blur released “The Great Escape”, their 4th album, on 11th September 1995. Featuring the singles “Country House”, “The Universal”, “Stereotypes” and “Charmless Man”, it went to No. 1 in the UK and was their first LP to dent the US Charts.
Critics gave the album almost universal praise on its release but it is probably the weakest of their Britpop trilogy when compared with “Parklife” and “Modern Life Is Rubbish” (more of a reflection on the other two as TGE is still a really good listen!)
“Country House” was part of “The Battle of Britpop” against “Roll With It” by Oasis. Both were released on August 14th with Blur outselling their rivals to claim the Number One Slot in the UK Charts.
