“We definitely felt pressure when writing and recording the album“ – An Interview with Lime Garden

After a run of stellar singles over the last few years, UK alt-indie group Lime Garden release their fantastic debut album today. One More Thing! cements their reputation as one of the hottest prospects of the last few years and more than lives up to the hype that has followed them. Released on So Young Records and produced by Ali Chant (Perfume Genius, PJ Harvey, Yard Act), the record is filled with the catchy, hooky songs (“I Want To Be You”, “Love Song”) that they have become known for but also an experimental side on tracks like “Floor”. One More Thing! will be available in standard red vinyl, a special Dinked edition Cornetto vinyl, and a special Lime Garden edition blue vinyl — you can get yourself a copy here.

Lime Garden are Chloe Howard (vocals, rhythm guitar), Leila Deeley (lead guitar), Tippi Morgan (bass) and Annabel Whittle (drums). They have played sold-out shows in the UK both headlining and in support of the likes of IDLES, The Big Moon, and Yard Act as well as playing Glastonbury and SXSW. They are about to embark on some tours of the UK, Europe and US – you can get tickets here.

We caught up with bassist Tippi to talk about the record and how they coped with the hype that surrounded them.

Hi Tippy! How’s everything going right now?
Great! We are currently getting ready for our first three shows of the year with Bombay Bicycle Club – Sheffield first 🙂

What classic album cover art is your current mood?
In The Court of the Crimson King – King Crimson

Your debut album One More Thing! is released on Feb 16th. When and where did you write and record it?
We were writing up until the week of going into the studio just in our bedrooms or at the tiny rehearsal room we rent in Peckham (London) with a million other bands. We recorded the album with Ali Chant in Bristol over two weeks. We rented an Airbnb near the studio and it was so fun to live there for a couple of weeks! We love Bristol <3

You’ve had some amazing praise from people like Hayley Williams and have been on a lot of the “hot lists”. Did that create any extra pressure when you were recording One More Thing?
We definitely felt pressure when writing and recording the album. We’ve worked so hard to get to this point and you only get one chance at releasing a debut album! Once we shared snippets of tracks with our friends/family/label we were instantly reassured and the pressure was taken off a bit.

The record will be available in some great-sounding vinyl editions (Cornetto!) – are you a fan/collector of colored vinyl?
We all do collect vinyl but Leila is a big CD fan! I personally have coloured vinyl from Blood Wizard and Wunderhorse that I’m pretty chuffed with.

If you could only listen to one record, what would it be?
It changes all the time but at the moment it’s Omnium Gatherum by King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. There’s a really cool mix of tracks on there and we were lucky enough to watch them play most of the album at End Of The Road last year.

How and where did the band get together?
Chloe, Annabel and Leila met at music college and started “Lime”. Eventually they moved to Brighton and met me and we’ve been best mates ever since!

You’ll be touring the UK soon and then playing some dates in Europe and the US (but not Philly unfortunately) and have already played big festivals such as Glastonbury and SXSW to name a few. What would be your dream venue to play?
We’re a bit obsessed with the Sphere in Las Vegas at the moment, I think we could have a really fun show there. Also Red Rocks Amphitheatre looks really cool – I love playing shows outdoors.

What would go on your signature pizza and what would it be called?
Olives, artichokes, sweetcorn, some nice tomatoes and pine nuts. I’d call it the One More Slice special.

What else do you have planned for 2024?
We’re touring the UK, Europe and America as well as playing a bunch of festivals! We’d love to get some TV appearances this year so manifesting that too.

With each release, Lime Garden have continued to further their reputation as one of indie’s hottest prospects with a host of tips behind them from NME’s 100, DORK’s Hype List, DIY’s Class of, The Sunday Times Culture’s Breaking Act, and The Independent’s New Sensations. The band also received a glowing endorsement from Paramore’s Hayley Williamson her special Everything Is Emo show on BBC Radio 6 Music.

Most recently, singles off One More Thing — “I Want To Be You,” “Love Song, and “Nepotism (baby)” — have been received with praise from NME, DIY, Clash, The Line Of Best Fit, DORK, whynow, Our Culture, Far Out Magazine, Wonderland, and more. They have also received  radio support across BBC Radio 6 Music (Chris Hawkins) and the Radio 1 Future Alternative show. Playlist inclusions include release New Music Friday UK, pulp (with cover!), The Other List, The Indie List, melomania, Hot New Bands, and New Music Daily on Spotify; New In Indie and New In Alternative at Apple Music; and Fresh Indie on Amazon Music. The band also covered YouTube Music’s New Alternative Indie playlist.
