New Album – “Chores” – SHAGGO
Chores is the recently released debut album from Brooklyn queer femme punk band SHAGGO. Out via Atlanta Zone Records, the record features seven songs about growing up and experiencing friendship heartbreak as well as menial everyday tasks and finding meaning in these things.
Mixing punk riffs with some shoegazey fuzz and a bit of riot grrrl attitude, the band have created some incredibly catchy tunes that have huge singalong choruses. Lead single “Minor League” was written after doing some people watching at a game and recording some of the absurdities they saw (actual and imaginary).
We wrote most of this album over the past couple of years, but some of the album started a lot earlier than that. ‘My House’ was something Lucy started writing when she was 19, fresh off a terrible friend breakup in college. We (Carina and Lucy) revisited this years later to see if this song could fit for SHAGGO; we changed up the bridge and structure a bit to make it feel like something we’d write now, but there’s something special about it that only a 19 year old could write that we really wanted to keep. Most of the other songs were written more spontaneously/in the moment at practice.

Recent single “Lost a Sock (Need a Friend)” is about realizing that priorities have been messed up and begins with some melancholy verses before launching into a massive chorus. My favorite track on Chores is “My House” and it is the epic centerpiece of the album.
I’m sure these songs will sound amazing live and you can catch the band when they play Bazooka! Fest on August 3rd at The Meadows, Brooklyn. You can tickets here.
Other than ‘Minor League’ (which we recorded very diy-style in our practice space), we recorded this album at our friend Moses’ studio space (Electric Baby Studios) which is actually in their basement. It was such a lovely experience; Moses and our lead guitarist Thea worked together to record, and it was so much more enjoyable recording with a friend.”

SHAGGO are Lucy Rinzler-Day (vocals, guitar), Carina Greenberg (bass, backing vocals), Thea Devine (lead guitar) and Jane Ehnhuus (drums). They are based in Brooklyn and the band was born out of a shared admiration for the 60’s band The Shaggs.
