On This Day…1992

ABBA released “Gold: Greatest Hits” on September 21st 1992. A 19 track compilation of the Swedish band’s best songs, it has sold over 30 million copies worldwide and is the second highest selling album of all time in the UK.
The band rose to fame when they won the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest with “Waterloo” which became a worldwide hit. The band went on to have many more hit songs and albums before splitting in 1982.
Their musical resurrgence started in the early 90’s when Erasure released a 4 track EP “Abba-esque” which stayed at number 1 in the UK for 5 weeks. “Gold” followed later that year and capitalized on the renewed interest spectacularly.
In 2005, the musical Mamma Mia! premiered in Stockholm and went on to worldwide success, eventually spawning a movie in 2008 starring Meryl Streep .
