On This Day…1991

Nirvana released “Nevermind” on September 24th 1991. Released by DGC Records, part of Geffen, expectations were initially fairly modest but it has gone on to sell over 30 million copies and is one of the most influential albums of all time.
One of the main reasons for its success was the single “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and its iconic video which became a huge hit on MTV. Further singles “Come As You Are”, “Lithium” and “In Bloom” continued the album’s massive sales. At one point, they were selling 300,000 copies a week.
Nirvana, along with bands such as Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and Stone Temple Pilots, were part of the Seattle Grunge scene that exploded in the early nineties. At the time, the charts were mainly mainstream pop artists such as Whitney Houston and Michael Jackson. These bands completely changed the music landscape and have been an influence to so many bands that have emerged over the past 25 years.
