On This Day…1988

Talk Talk released “The Spirit of Eden” on September 16 1988. The band’s fourth album, it was a radical departure from their previous, more commercial work. There were no hits like “It’s My Life” or “Life’s What you Make It”; just six tracks edited from many hours of improvised performances which drew on many different musical styles.
It received mixed reviews and was not a commercial success. However, over the years, it has been re-evaluated and is now seen by many as an overlooked classic and a major influence on bands such as Radiohead and Elbow.
